The EAGLE CUTTING TOOL HT-1228-B-I is a 12-28 UNF high-speed steel (HSS) hand bottom tap designed to cut threads to the bottom of a blind hole. The bottom chamfer profile — typically 1 to 2 threads of taper — allows threading closer to the base of the hole than plug or taper taps can reach. This tap is driven manually using a standard tap wrench and is suited for threading steel, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable materials. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance trades reach for a bottom tap as the finishing step in a three-tap sequence or whenever a fully threaded blind hole is required.
This tap is used in general machining, maintenance and repair operations (MRO), and fabrication environments where a 12-28 UNF thread form is specified. The 12-28 thread designation is a Unified National Fine thread on a No. 12 screw size, commonly found in precision assemblies, instrument panels, and light mechanical components. It is appropriate for bench work, drill-press setups, and hand-tapping applications where a power-driven tap is not used.
Designed as a hand-operated bottom tap for use in any application requiring a 12-28 UNF thread. Suitable for threading ferrous and non-ferrous materials in MRO, fabrication, and general machining work.
This tap is installed by a machinist or qualified trades technician using a properly sized tap wrench. Always use a cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce friction and extend tap life. Back off the tap periodically to break chips and clear the flutes, especially in blind holes. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use — a damaged tap left in a blind hole can be extremely difficult to remove.
