The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 839738 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar measuring 5/16 inches thick, 3/8 inches wide, and 36 inches long. Manufactured to AISI Type O1 specification, this flat stock is used by machinists, toolmakers, and metal fabricators who require a precision-ground, weldable steel that responds predictably to oil-quench hardening. The stock ships in an annealed (soft) condition, making it machinable before hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, ensuring tight dimensional control for tooling and die applications.
This flat stock is suited for small-shop and production toolroom use where close-tolerance blanks are needed for punches, dies, gauges, blades, and similar tooling components. Its compact 3/8 inch width and 5/16 inch thickness make it well-suited for light-section tooling where material removal before heat treat needs to be minimal. The 36 inch length allows multiple blanks to be cut from a single bar.
Designed as a standard AISI O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar suitable for general toolroom, die-making, and precision fixture applications requiring a readily available oil-quench grade.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate metalworking equipment. Hardening operations require controlled furnace heating and oil quenching per AISI O1 heat-treat guidelines - consult your material supplier or metallurgist for cycle specifications. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating tool steel. Allow material to cool fully and temper promptly after quenching to reduce brittleness.
