The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 81175630 is a pre hardened alloy steel flat stock bar cut from AISI/SAE Type 4142 chromoly steel. It measures 36 inches long, 4.5 inches wide, and 0.1875 inches thick, and weighs 8.57 pounds. Type 4142 is a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel valued for its high strength, toughness, and through-hardening characteristics in the pre hardened condition. This flat stock is suited for toolmakers, machinists, and fabricators who need a ready-to-use material with tight dimensional tolerances. Length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches, width tolerance is plus 0.005 inches, thickness tolerance is plus 0.001 inches, and square tolerance is 0.003 inches.
This flat stock is used in machine shops, tool and die operations, and general fabrication environments where AISI/SAE 4142 alloy steel is specified. Common applications include fixture plates, die components, wear plates, tooling blanks, and structural machine parts requiring moderate-to-high hardness and consistent cross-section dimensions. The pre hardened condition eliminates the need for a separate hardening step in many applications, saving processing time on the shop floor. It is appropriate for both light machining and grinding operations when finished surfaces are required.
Designed as a standard AISI/SAE Type 4142 alloy steel flat stock suitable for tooling, die making, and general machining applications where chromoly pre hardened flat bar stock is specified.
Machining, grinding, or cutting should be performed by qualified machinists using tooling rated for hardened alloy steels. Secure the workpiece properly before any cutting or grinding operation. When welding is required, follow preheat and interpass temperature procedures appropriate for 4142 chromoly alloy steel to avoid cracking. Always wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when handling or processing metal stock.
