The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 57901 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock used in toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Cut to 3/16 inches thick, 10 inches wide, and 36 inches long, this flat bar ships at 19.33 pounds and meets AISI Type O1 Oil Hardening material specification. O1 tool steel is known for its consistent response to oil-quench heat treatment, making it a reliable choice when machinists or toolmakers need a blank that will hold dimensional stability through hardening. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, which reduces hand-fitting time before heat treat.
This flat stock is suited to machine shops, tool and die operations, and metalworking trades that require pre-cut bar stock in standard dimensions. The 10-inch width provides enough material for medium-size die plates, stripper plates, punch holders, and similar flat tooling components. Length tolerance runs plus 0.5 inches, allowing the end user to face the stock to final length. Width tolerance is plus 0.005 inches with zero undersize deviation, supporting layout work without undersize concerns. Squareness is controlled to 0.003 inches edge and 0.004 inches per inch of thickness at the end.
Designed as a standard O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat bar for general toolmaking, die making, jig and fixture fabrication, and precision machining applications where oil-quench hardenable stock is required.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker using appropriate cutting fluids and carbide or HSS tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment, including oil quenching and tempering, should be carried out by personnel trained in metallurgical procedures following the material supplier guidelines for AISI O1. Always wear appropriate PPE when cutting, grinding, or heat-treating steel bar stock. Secure the workpiece properly before any machining operation to prevent movement.
