The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 57741 is an O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmakers, machinists, and die makers who require a readily machinable steel that can be hardened after rough shaping. O1 is a general-purpose oil-hardening tool steel conforming to AISI Type O1 specification, valued for its predictable dimensional stability through the hardening process. This piece measures 3/16 inches thick, 10 inches wide, and 18 inches long and weighs 9.66 pounds. Thickness tolerance is held to plus or minus 0.001 inches, width tolerance is plus 0.005 inches minus 0.000 inches, and length tolerance is plus 0.25 inches, giving machinists reliable stock dimensions from which to lay out and machine close-tolerance components.
O1 flat stock in this size is commonly used in toolrooms, job shops, and maintenance departments to fabricate punches, dies, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and cutting tools. Its flat bar form reduces rough stock removal time compared to round bar. The 10-inch width and 18-inch length make it suitable for larger die sections, fixture plates, or blanks requiring minimal saw setup. Trade professionals working in precision manufacturing, tool and die, or industrial maintenance will find this stock format practical for short-run and prototype work.
Designed as a general-purpose O1 oil-hardening tool steel flat stock suitable for toolroom fabrication, die making, and precision fixture work where AISI Type O1 material specification is required.
Cutting and machining of tool steel flat stock should be performed by qualified machinists using appropriate metal-cutting equipment with feeds and speeds suited to tool steel. Heat treating to final hardness should be performed by a qualified heat treater following AISI O1 recommended practice for oil quench and temper cycles. Proper personal protective equipment, including eye protection and cut-resistant gloves, is required when handling and cutting bar stock. Secure stock firmly before cutting to prevent movement and ensure accurate dimensions.
