The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 08712929 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar cut to 7/64 inches thick, 1/2 inch wide, and 18 inches long. A2 tool steel is an air-hardening, cold-work die steel known for its dimensional stability during heat treatment, good wear resistance, and moderate toughness. This flat stock is supplied in the annealed condition, ready for machining, grinding, and subsequent hardening. It is used by toolmakers, machinists, and die makers to fabricate punches, dies, jigs, fixtures, and precision cutting tools. Tight tolerances on all four dimensions make it suitable for precision tool and die work without requiring extensive stock removal before layout.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, machine shops, and industrial maintenance environments. Its dimensions make it well suited for small punch and die sets, form tools, gages, and similar precision components where controlled heat treatment response is required. The 18-inch length provides sufficient stock for most small-to-medium tooling applications. Professionals working with cold-work tooling applications will find the A2 specification appropriate for moderate-production stamping dies and cutting tools.
Designed as a standard A2 tool steel flat stock bar for use in tool and die fabrication, punch and die sets, and precision machining applications requiring AISI A2 air-hardening material.
Machining and grinding of A2 tool steel should be performed by qualified toolmakers or machinists using appropriate cutting fluids and tooling rated for tool steel. Heat treatment, including hardening and tempering, should follow AISI A2 guidelines and be performed by a qualified heat treater or tool room professional. Always allow the bar to reach ambient temperature before precision layout or final grinding. Proper personal protective equipment is required when cutting, grinding, or handling tool steel stock.
