The DRILL ROD TOOL STEELS 03717980 is an A2 air-hardening tool steel flat stock bar intended for toolmaking, die work, jig fabrication, and precision machining applications. Measuring 3/16 inches thick by 3/16 inches wide by 36 inches long, this flat stock is machined to tight tolerances, with thickness tolerance held to plus or minus 0.001 inches and width tolerance of plus 0.000 to 0.005 inches. Weighing approximately 0.36 pounds, it is a compact, single-piece bar suited for shops that need small-section tool steel in a standard length. AISI A2 grade offers good dimensional stability during air hardening, making it a common choice when distortion control is critical.
This flat stock is used in tool and die shops, maintenance and repair operations, and general metalworking environments. It is well suited for fabricating punches, forming dies, cutting tools, gauges, and similar precision components where consistent cross-section and predictable heat-treat response are required. The 36-inch length allows machinists to cut multiple shorter blanks from a single piece, reducing waste and setup time. Applications are typically found in industrial and commercial shop settings rather than residential environments.
Designed as an OEM-style flat stock bar for toolmaking and machining applications requiring AISI A2 air-hardening tool steel in a 3/16 inches by 3/16 inches cross-section.
Cutting, grinding, and heat treating of tool steel should be performed by qualified machinists or tool and die makers using appropriate equipment and personal protective equipment. Power down and lock out all machinery before securing the workpiece. Follow established shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards when cutting or grinding tool steel. Heat treating to harden A2 steel should be performed according to the material supplier's recommended thermal cycle; do not attempt hardening without a calibrated furnace and proper quench or air-cool setup.
