The CLEVELAND C70331 is a wire gauge No. 27 screw machine length drill bit designed for fast, accurate hole drilling in metal and light alloy applications. Built from high-speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust at entry. The shortened screw machine length body — 2-1/16 inches overall — provides added rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, making it well suited for drill press and CNC work where chatter and deflection are concerns. Two spiral flutes with a regular helix and parallel web configuration clear chips efficiently throughout the cut.
This bit is intended for production and job-shop environments where wire-gauge sizing is specified. At 0.1440 inches in diameter, it covers common tapping and clearance holes in ferrous and non-ferrous stock. The web-thinned split point is particularly useful when drilling alloy steel, aluminum, and similar materials where a standard chisel point would require pre-spotting. It is sold individually and is part of the CLEVELAND Series 2330 heavy-duty line, which is built to ASME B94.11M standards and meets NAS 907 Type C specification.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held drill motors equipped with chucks or collets accepting a 0.1440-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are alloy steel and aluminum.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation and verify runout is within acceptable limits for the application. Ensure the workpiece is clamped securely — screw machine length bits are stiff but small-diameter drills remain susceptible to breakage if the part shifts during entry. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend edge life and improve hole finish. Follow shop safety protocols and applicable OSHA machine-guarding requirements when operating drill presses or CNC equipment.
