The CLEVELAND C70178 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for precision drilling in metal and non-ferrous materials. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel with a gold oxide coating, it delivers extended tool life under high-heat cutting conditions. The bit measures 0.0820 inches in diameter (wire size 45) with an overall length of 2.125 inches and a flute length of 1.125 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces walking on entry and lowers thrust requirements. A tapered web with web thinning further aids chip evacuation. This bit is sold individually and is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and HVAC or mechanical trade professionals requiring tight-tolerance holes in production or field settings.
The C70178 is suited for drilling aluminum and similar non-ferrous workpiece materials, as well as general metalworking applications where a heavy-duty cobalt bit is specified. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard drill chucks without an adapter. Its regular spiral flute geometry handles a broad range of feed rates. The Series 2213 designation and NAS 907 Type J standard make it a common specification in aerospace-adjacent maintenance and fabrication environments where material traceability matters.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or production-spec drill bit for applications requiring a wire gauge 45 (0.0820 inch) diameter hole, conforming to NAS 907 Type J standards. Primary workpiece material is aluminum; suitable for other non-ferrous metals within the 0.0500 to 0.1000 inch diameter range covered by Series 2213.
Install in a standard drill press, hand drill, or CNC spindle with a chuck capacity covering 0.0820 inches. Power down and secure the workpiece before bit changes. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubricant when drilling aluminum or stacked materials to manage heat buildup. Inspect the split point for chipping before each use, as cobalt bits can become brittle if subjected to lateral load or improper storage.
