The CLEVELAND C58905 is a spiral flute tap designed for blind hole threading in metric applications. It cuts an M4 x 0.70 thread to a 2B class of fit using a three-flute, right-hand spiral configuration with a 52-degree helix angle. The fast flute style efficiently evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it well suited to bottoming work where chip packing is a concern. Manufactured from high speed steel and finished with a TICN (titanium carbonitride) coating, the tap offers improved wear resistance and lubricity compared to uncoated tooling. Overall length is 2.125 inches with a thread length of 0.38 inches.
This tap is intended for blind hole threading in workpieces made of aluminum and non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and steel. The bottoming chamfer allows threads to be cut close to the bottom of a blind hole, which is a common requirement in precision machined parts and fabricated assemblies. It is used by machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working with M4 fastener patterns on manual or CNC equipment. The D4 thread limit designation makes it appropriate for tapping holes that will accept standard metric M4 x 0.70 fasteners.
Designed for blind hole threading applications requiring an M4 x 0.70 metric thread to a 2B class of fit. Suitable for use in aluminum and non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap holders and machine setups that accept a 0.168-inch shank diameter.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using the appropriate tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the drilled hole before beginning the cut. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or aluminum. Back the tap out periodically to clear chips if performing the operation manually.
