The CLEVELAND C57406 is a spiral point plug tap designed for through-hole threading in ferrous metals. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright finish, it cuts a 1/4-20 UNC right-hand thread to a Class 3B tolerance using an H3 thread limit. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap into the hole rather than packing them behind the flutes, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. With 2 flutes and a plug chamfer, it starts easily and works efficiently at production feed rates in machine or hand-tapping setups.
This tap is rated for threading alloy steel, cast iron, high carbon steel, and tool steel. It is a reliable choice for maintenance, repair, and production work where consistent Class 3B thread quality is required in through-hole configurations. The Series 1053 designation places it in a well-established Cleveland line of general-purpose machine taps used across metalworking, fabrication, and industrial maintenance applications.
Designed for through-hole threading in alloy steel, cast iron, high carbon steel, and tool steel workpieces requiring a 1/4-20 UNC, Class 3B thread.
This tap is installed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a tapping machine, drill press, or hand tap wrench. Always ensure the workpiece is securely clamped and the tap is properly aligned before engaging. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded to reduce heat and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread quality degrades.
