The CLEVELAND C56052 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting 4-40 UNC internal threads in both blind and through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated taps. The plug chamfer distributes cutting load across the first several threads, making it well suited for general-purpose threading where the tap can enter from one side without requiring a bottoming finish. Right-hand thread direction and a 2B class of fit make this tap compatible with standard fastener tolerance requirements. The H2 thread limit ensures accurate sizing for most production and maintenance threading tasks.
This tap is intended for use on ferrous and hard materials including cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. It handles both blind hole and through-hole threading, making it a versatile choice for machine shops, maintenance facilities, and toolroom applications. The 3-flute straight-flute geometry is appropriate for short-chipping materials where chip evacuation is manageable without helical flute assistance. It is typically driven by hand using a tap wrench or T-handle, though it may also be used in low-speed machine tapping setups.
Designed for threading 4-40 UNC tapped holes in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Suitable for blind hole and through-hole threading operations where a plug chamfer entry is appropriate.
This tap is installed by a machinist or toolroom technician using a standard tap wrench, T-handle, or compatible tapping fixture. Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the tap is started square to the hole to prevent thread misalignment or tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel or hardened steels. For blind holes, track thread depth carefully to avoid bottoming the tap against the hole floor.
