The CLEVELAND C55376 is a spiral point tap designed for through-hole threading in metal components. It is manufactured from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating that increases surface hardness and reduces friction during cutting. The tap features a plug chamfer, a 2-flute design, and a right-hand thread direction. It cuts a 5-40 UNF thread form to a Class 2B fit tolerance, making it suitable for precision fastener applications. The H2 thread limit provides consistent sizing within tight tolerance ranges. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians use this tap for production and maintenance work where accurate internal threads are required in through-hole configurations.
This tap is suited for threading operations in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. The plug chamfer style distributes cutting load across several lead threads, making it a practical choice for through-hole applications in both manual and machine tapping setups. The TiCN coating extends tool life in harder materials and reduces the need for frequent tool changes in production environments. It fits standard tap holders and chucks sized for the 0.141 inch shank diameter.
Designed for through-hole threading applications in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. Compatible with standard tap holders and chucks accepting a 0.141 inch shank diameter. Suitable for both hand tapping and machine tapping operations producing a 5-40 UNF internal thread.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard shop safety practices. Secure the workpiece firmly before threading and ensure the tap is properly aligned with the drilled hole to prevent tap breakage. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded. Always back the tap out periodically to clear chips when tapping by hand.
