The CLEVELAND C55104 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it produces 8-32 UNC threads with a plug chamfer and right-hand thread direction. The 4-flute geometry provides good chip control and thread form accuracy across a range of workpiece materials. At 2.125 inches overall length with a 0.75-inch thread length, the C55104 is sized for standard hand-tapping and machine-tapping operations where a plug-start chamfer is appropriate. It is typically used by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working in job shops, production facilities, or industrial maintenance settings.
The C55104 is suited for both blind-hole and through-hole threading applications. Its TiN coating improves surface hardness and lubricity, reducing friction and extending tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. The Class 2B thread fit and H3 thread limit make it appropriate for standard tolerance threading work across a broad range of common engineering materials.
Designed for blind-hole and through-hole threading in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Compatible with standard tap wrenches, T-handle wrenches, and machine tap holders sized for a 0.168-inch shank diameter. Produces 8-32 UNC Class 2B internal threads per the Series 1002TN specification.
Installation should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Ensure the workpiece is properly secured before starting the threading operation and use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded. When tapping blind holes, back the tap out periodically to clear chips and prevent tap breakage. Always power down and lock out any machine tool before changing or setting tooling.
