The CLEVELAND C54866 is a metric straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting M20x2.50 internal threads in both blind and through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bottoming tap features a minimal chamfer lead that allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole with maximum usable thread depth. The tap carries a 6H class of fit and a D7 thread limit, which positions it for close-tolerance work where precise thread geometry is required. With 4 flutes and a 4.469-inch overall length, it is well-suited for manual tapping operations in machine shops and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists, toolroom technicians, and industrial maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
This tap is used on M20x2.50 metric coarse threads, the standard pitch for M20 fastener applications across general industry, structural assemblies, and heavy equipment. It is appropriate for both blind hole threading and through-hole threading scenarios. The bottoming chamfer style makes it the final tap in a tapping sequence when a plug or taper tap has already started the thread. It performs across a range of workpiece materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel.
Designed for use in blind hole and through-hole threading of M20x2.50 metric coarse threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap wrenches and tapping fixtures accepting a 0.652-inch shank with an 11/16-inch square drive end.
Bottoming taps should be used as the final step in a three-tap sequence after a taper or plug tap has established the thread. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material before and during tapping to reduce friction and extend tool life. Use a properly sized tap wrench to maintain axial alignment and prevent tap breakage, particularly near the bottom of a blind hole. Back the tap off periodically to clear chips when working in deep or blind holes.
