The CLEVELAND C54781 is a 5/8-11 UNC bottoming hand tap designed for threading operations in blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap delivers consistent thread formation in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a 4-flute straight flute geometry with a right-hand thread direction and a Class 3B fit, H3 thread limit, for close-tolerance work. The overall length is 3.813 inches, with a thread length of 1.09 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals use this tap for production and repair threading tasks.
This tap is suited for both blind hole and through-hole threading applications across general machining, fabrication, and maintenance environments. The bottoming chamfer allows threads to be cut to near the bottom of a blind hole, making it appropriate for close-tolerance fastener installations. It is part of the Cleveland Series 1003 hand tap line and is used in conjunction with a tap handle or wrench. The 5/8-11 UNC thread form is one of the most common unified coarse thread standards in North American industrial use.
Rated for use in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use hand tap for standard 5/8-11 UNC threading applications in machining and maintenance settings.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap handle or T-handle wrench sized for the square drive. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is started perpendicular to the drilled hole to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material before and during tapping. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and back the tap out periodically to clear chips, especially in blind hole applications.
