The CLEVELAND C54538 is an M8x1.00 bottoming hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in blind and through holes. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it delivers consistent thread form across a range of workpiece materials. The 4-flute straight flute design channels chips effectively during hand tapping operations. With an overall length of 2.719 inches and a thread length of 0.69 inches, it suits benchtop and machine-assisted tapping setups alike. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to be taken close to the bottom of a blind hole, which is critical in close-tolerance machining applications. It carries a 6H class of fit with a D5 thread limit, meeting standard Metric Fine tolerances for production and repair work.
This tap is suited for threading M8x1.00 Metric Fine holes in alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. It is commonly used in machine shops, maintenance and repair operations, and general fabrication environments where Metric Fine thread standards are required. The bottoming chamfer makes it appropriate for second or third pass use following a taper or plug tap, or as the primary tap when full thread depth near the bottom of a blind hole is needed.
Compatible with alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. Suitable for both blind hole threading and through-hole threading applications where an M8x1.00 Metric Fine thread is specified.
Use in a calibrated tap wrench or suitable tapping fixture; ensure the tap is started square to the workpiece to avoid thread misalignment. Secure the workpiece fully before tapping and apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded. When following a taper or plug tap in a blind hole, clear chips between passes before advancing the bottoming tap. Handle high speed steel taps carefully to avoid chipping the flutes on hard or interrupted surfaces.
