The CLEVELAND C54222 is a 6-32 straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind holes and through-holes. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it delivers reliable thread-cutting performance in a compact 2.0-inch overall length. The bottoming chamfer allows threading to the bottom of a blind hole, making it the right choice when thread engagement close to the base of a pocket is required. With a 2B class of fit and H3 thread limit, it produces threads within standard tolerance for general mechanical assemblies. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians across metalworking and fabrication shops use this tap for hand-tapping operations.
This tap suits applications in light manufacturing, maintenance repair, and fabrication environments. It is appropriate for threading operations in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces. The 6-32 UNC thread form is widely used in instrument panels, electronic enclosures, small mechanical assemblies, and precision hardware where a fine thread is needed in small-diameter stock. The straight-flute design works in both blind and through-hole configurations when chips are managed with proper technique and cutting fluid.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard tooling option for any application requiring a 6-32 UNC bottoming hand tap in Series 1003 configuration. Compatible with alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces.
Hand taps of this type are installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench sized for the 3/16-inch square drive. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is secured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 6-32 UNC threads. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping oil throughout the operation to reduce heat and extend tool life. Back the tap out periodically to break chips, especially in blind holes, to prevent tap breakage.
