The CLEVELAND C54191 is a 3-piece tap set designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads in metal workpieces. The set includes bottoming, plug, and taper chamfer taps, allowing the technician to progress through thread-starting, intermediate, and full-depth finishing in a single coordinated set. All three taps are manufactured from High Speed Steel with a bright finish and share a 3-flute geometry that promotes chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole applications. Overall length is 1.938 inches with a thread length of 0.310 inches. Thread limit is H2, appropriate for Class 2B tolerance fits common in general mechanical assembly work.
This tap set is suited for machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals working on small-diameter fastener threads in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar machinable materials. The 5-40 UNC thread size is common in instrument panels, electronic enclosures, small mechanical assemblies, and precision fixtures. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional fastener applications. The three-chamfer configuration in one set eliminates the need to source bottoming, plug, and taper taps separately.
Designed for cutting 5-40 UNC right-hand internal threads in general machining and maintenance applications where H2 thread limit tolerances are specified.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly sized tap wrench or machine tap holder. Always use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Start with the taper tap to align the thread entry, follow with the plug tap, and finish with the bottoming tap when threading to the bottom of a blind hole. Inspect the tap for wear or damage before each use — a broken tap in a blind hole can render the workpiece unusable.
