The CLEVELAND C54189 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, it cuts a 5-40 UNC thread profile in the right-hand direction. The plug chamfer provides a balance between starting ease and thread engagement, making it suitable for both blind-hole and through-hole threading operations. With an overall length of 1.938 inches and a thread length of 0.31 inches, this tap is sized for small-fastener work common in precision fabrication, maintenance, and light manufacturing environments. A machinist or toolmaker typically deploys this tap in a hand-tapping setup or low-speed machine tapping application.
The C54189 is appropriate for threading operations in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. Its H2 thread limit keeps ground tolerances tight, supporting Class 2B and 3B fit requirements where moderate clearance is acceptable. The 3-flute geometry provides adequate chip clearance for most general-purpose applications in these material groups. It belongs to Cleveland Series 1002, a line of standard hand taps intended for production and maintenance use across metalworking shops and field service environments.
Designed for threading alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces requiring a 5-40 UNC internal thread with Class 2B or 3B fit. Part of Cleveland Series 1002 standard hand taps.
Installation is performed by a machinist or qualified technician using a tap wrench or appropriate low-speed tapping setup. Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the tap is started perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread misalignment. Apply a suitable cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Do not force the tap — back off periodically to break chips and prevent tap breakage, especially in blind holes.
