The CLEVELAND C54122 is a 3-56 UNF straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in both blind and through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this bottoming-chamfer tap cuts close to the bottom of blind holes where plug or taper taps cannot reach. The 3-flute geometry provides strong chip clearance in a compact profile suited to the small 3-56 thread size. With an overall length of 1.813 inches and a thread length of 0.500 inches, it is sized for precise work in tight-tolerance assemblies. Machinist and tool-and-die professionals rely on this style of tap for high-accuracy threading in small fastener applications.
This tap is suited for use in manual tapping operations on a range of metallic materials including alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and free-machining stainless steel. The 3-56 UNF thread form is commonly found in small instrument, electronic, and precision mechanical assemblies. The bottoming chamfer makes this an appropriate choice when thread engagement must start at or very near the bottom of a blind hole. It is sold individually and is compatible with standard tap wrenches sized for the 0.141-inch shank diameter.
Designed for cutting 3-56 UNF internal threads in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces in blind-hole and through-hole configurations.
This tap is installed by a machinist or tool-and-die technician using a standard manual tap wrench sized to accept the 0.141-inch shank. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is started straight and perpendicular to the hole axis to avoid thread distortion or tap breakage in small-diameter work. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Do not force the tap; back off periodically to break chips and clear the flutes.
