The CLEVELAND C54073 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting M2x0.40 metric coarse internal threads in a range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from high speed steel with a bright uncoated finish, this tap features a taper chamfer that progressively engages the workpiece to ease thread starting and reduce torque demand. The 3-flute straight-flute geometry evacuates chips through the entry of the hole, making it well-suited for both blind-hole and through-hole threading operations. Overall length is 1.75 inches with a thread length of 0.44 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. Class of fit is 6H with a D3 thread limit for consistent thread tolerance control in precision applications.
This tap is intended for use in manual hand-tapping setups, tapping fixtures, or low-speed machine tapping where straight-flute chip evacuation is appropriate. Suitable material applications include alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel. It is a strong fit for maintenance, repair, and fabrication work where M2 metric coarse threads are required in small-diameter through or blind holes. Part of the CLEVELAND Series 1001 tap line.
Designed for use in blind-hole and through-hole threading applications in alloy steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and free-machining stainless steel workpieces requiring M2x0.40 metric coarse threads.
Hand taps of this size are installed and driven by machinists or tooling technicians using a tap wrench or compatible tapping fixture. Always apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during tapping to reduce friction and extend tap life. For blind holes, clear chips frequently by reversing the tap to avoid packing and breakage. Broken tap removal in hardened materials is difficult at this diameter, so avoid excessive torque and do not force the tap past resistance.
