The CLEVELAND C53666 is a drift tool manufactured from high speed steel, designed to remove taper shank drill bits from spindles, sockets, and sleeves. A drift is a wedge-shaped punch inserted into the tang slot of a Morse taper socket or sleeve to drive out a seated drill bit or other taper shank tooling. The high speed steel construction provides the hardness and toughness needed to withstand repeated impact without deforming. This tool is a standard shop consumable used by machinists, tool and die techs, and maintenance professionals working with drill presses, lathes, and milling machines.
The C53666 drift is compatible with 2 Morse taper (2MT) tooling setups. It is typically used in machine shop environments, maintenance departments, and job site fabrication settings where taper shank drill bits are regularly changed out. The 2MT taper size is one of the most common standards found in benchtop and floor-standing drill presses as well as lathe tailstocks. Any operation that routinely seats and removes 2MT tooling will keep a drift on hand for quick bit changes.
Compatible with 2MT taper shank drill bits and corresponding Morse taper sockets and sleeves. Designed as a standard replacement drift for use with 2 Morse taper tooling systems.
Always power down and de-energize the machine spindle before using a drift to remove tooling. Insert the drift into the tang slot of the taper socket and strike with a mallet or dead-blow hammer to unseat the taper shank. Never use a drift as a pry bar or striking tool for any purpose other than taper shank removal. Keep the drift clean and free of burrs to ensure proper seating in the slot.
