The CLEVELAND C44655 is a rectangle ground tool bit blank machined from M42 cobalt high-speed steel. It measures 5/8 inches wide, 3/4 inches high, and 5 inches in overall length. Tool bit blanks serve as the raw stock that machinists grind to a custom cutting edge geometry for use in lathe toolholders, boring bars, and similar metalcutting applications. M42 cobalt grade provides elevated red hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it a practical choice when cutting harder workpiece materials or running at higher surface speeds. The ground finish ensures consistent dimensional accuracy and a flat, square seating surface before the machinist applies a final grind.
This tool bit blank is suited for job shops, toolrooms, and production environments where custom-ground single-point cutting tools are required. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, and threading operations on metal lathes. The rectangle cross-section fits standard square-shank toolholders and tool posts commonly found on manual and CNC lathes. M42 cobalt blanks are frequently chosen for harder alloys, stainless steels, and heat-resistant superalloys where standard HSS loses its edge prematurely.
Designed as a general-purpose tool bit blank for use in standard square-shank lathe toolholders and tool posts that accept a 5/8 inches by 3/4 inches rectangle shank profile.
Tool bit blanks require grinding to the desired cutting geometry before use; a bench or tool-and-cutter grinder with an appropriate wheel is standard shop equipment for this task. Machinists should use proper eye protection and follow established grinding practices when shaping the blank. Ensure the toolholder set screws are tight and the ground tool is seated squarely in the holder before initiating a cut. Inspect the finished cutting edge for cracks or chips after grinding before placing the tool in service.
