The CLEVELAND C44540 is a square tool bit blank ground from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, designed for machinists and toolroom professionals who grind their own custom cutting tools. At 3/16 inches wide by 3/16 inches high with an overall length of 2-1/2 inches, this blank provides the raw stock needed to produce form tools, lathe bits, boring tools, and specialty profiles. M42 cobalt steel offers higher red hardness and wear resistance compared to standard M2 high-speed steel, making it a practical choice for cutting harder workpiece materials or for applications where tool life is a primary concern.
This blank is suited for use in machine shops, toolrooms, and maintenance environments where operators grind tools to specific geometries. It is appropriate for manual lathes, turret lathes, and similar single-point or formed-tool applications where a custom ground profile is required. The square cross-section allows for consistent tool holding in standard bit holders and blocks during the grinding process.
Designed as a raw grinding blank for use in standard tool bit holders accepting 3/16 inch square shank stock. Specific machine or holder compatibility depends on the geometry ground by the operator.
Tool bit blanks are ground to final geometry by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician using a bench or surface grinder with appropriate wheel dressing. Eye protection and grinding guards must be in place during all grinding operations per applicable shop safety standards. Ensure the tool holder or bit block is clean and free of debris before seating the finished tool. Inspect the ground edge for cracks or chips before placing the tool in service.
