The CLEVELAND C16896 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in demanding industrial and trade applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), this bit delivers extended tool life and heat resistance compared to standard HSS offerings. It features a 15/64 inch (0.2344 inch) diameter, a 135-degree split point for fast engagement and reduced walking, and a parabolic flute geometry that efficiently evacuates chips during drilling. A straight shank provides compatibility with standard drill chucks, and the right-hand cut configuration suits the vast majority of powered drilling equipment. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with hard or abrasive materials will find this bit a reliable production tool.
This bit is intended for drilling through a wide range of materials including aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. Its taper length body and parabolic flute design make it especially well-suited for applications requiring deeper holes or faster chip clearance than a jobber-length bit provides. It fits standard drill presses, CNC machines, and handheld drill motors equipped with a straight-shank chuck. The TiN coating reduces friction and extends cutting edge life in high-cycle production or repetitive maintenance drilling scenarios.
Rated for use in aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. Designed as a heavy-duty taper length replacement bit for applications requiring the 15/64 inch diameter and straight shank configuration per DIN 338.
Install and remove drill bits only after the drill press or powered tool is fully powered down and the chuck has stopped rotating. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck jaws and verify concentricity before beginning a cut. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for ferrous materials to preserve coating life, even though this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges and TiN coating for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit when point geometry is compromised.
