The CLEVELAND C16889 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for heavy-duty metal drilling in demanding trade and industrial applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life when cutting hard and abrasive materials. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and lowers thrust requirements at the start of a cut. With a parabolic flute geometry and web-thinned, tapered web configuration, the C16889 evacuates chips efficiently and maintains cutting performance through deeper holes. It carries a straight shank measuring 0.125 inches in diameter and complies with ASME B94.11M and DIN 340 standards.
This bit is suited for machining shops, maintenance facilities, and fabrication environments where reliable performance across a range of materials is required. It handles aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel, and plastic. The taper length body — at 5.125 inches overall with a 2.75-inch flute — gives it more reach than a jobber-length bit while maintaining rigidity, making it practical for deeper hole applications in production or field repair work.
The C16889 is compatible with materials including aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, stainless steel, tool steel, and plastic. It fits any standard drill chuck or machine spindle accepting a 0.125-inch straight shank.
This drill bit is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators using drill presses, CNC machining centers, or handheld power drills with compatible chucks. Secure the straight shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify shank runout is within acceptable limits. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material to manage heat, particularly when drilling stainless steel or nickel alloys. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit when edge integrity is compromised.
