The CLEVELAND C16778 is a taper length cobalt drill bit engineered for heavy-duty drilling applications in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built to Series 2575 standards, it carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and lowers thrust on entry, making it effective in both hand-held and machine setups. The parabolic flute geometry clears chips aggressively, reducing heat buildup during deep cuts. At 3/32 inch (0.0938 inch) diameter with a 2.25-inch flute length and a 4.25-inch overall length, this bit is dimensionally consistent with ASME B94.11M and DIN 340 requirements. Manufactured to an M42 cobalt grade, it holds a cutting edge longer than standard HSS in hard or abrasive materials. Diameter tolerance is held to +0.0000 to -0.0005 inch.
This drill bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling in metalworking shops, fabrication facilities, and industrial maintenance environments. It performs across a broad material range including aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The straight shank fits standard drill chucks without adapters. Secure the straight shank firmly in a keyed or keyless drill chuck before operation. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter — cobalt bits tolerate higher speeds than standard HSS but still require proper feeds and speeds to prevent premature wear. Use cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel, nickel alloy, or tool steel to manage heat. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace if chipping or dulling is observed.
