The CLEVELAND C16768 is a taper length cobalt drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications in industrial and shop environments. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with an oxide gold coating, it delivers heat resistance and extended tool life under high-feed drilling conditions. The bit features a 135-degree split point that starts without a center punch and reduces thrust load at entry. Flute geometry is parabolic, which improves chip evacuation in deep-hole drilling. It is sized to wire gauge No. 45, equivalent to 0.0820 inches in decimal. Machinists, tool-and-die techs, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this bit.
The C16768 is suited for drilling aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel. The parabolic flute and web-thinned, tapered web configuration make it effective in both production and maintenance drilling scenarios where standard jobber-length bits lack the reach or chip-clearing capacity needed. It conforms to DIN 338 specification and is rated as a heavy-duty grade tool. Right-hand cut direction is standard for conventional drill press, CNC, and hand-drill setups.
Designed for use in standard drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand drills with a straight-shank chuck. Material compatibility includes aluminum, brass, carbon steel, cast iron, nickel alloy, plastic, stainless steel, and tool steel.
Install into a straight-shank drill chuck and confirm the bit is fully seated and tightened before operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for stainless steel and nickel alloy applications to manage heat buildup, as this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use, particularly when drilling abrasive materials like cast iron or tool steel. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements during operation.
