The CLEVELAND C15073 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-productivity drilling in demanding shop and field environments. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it carries a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on contact and lowers thrust requirements at the start of the cut. The parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation during deep-hole passes. At 3-3/8 inches overall length with a 2-inch flute length, this stub-style bit fits low-clearance setups where a jobber-length bit would interfere. It cuts right-hand and is sized at 27/64 inches (0.4219 inches decimal) with a straight cylindrical shank. Licensed machinists, tool and die technicians, and HVAC sheet metal fabricators are the primary installers.
This bit is suited for drilling alloy steels, aluminum, and other materials that generate heat and work-harden under standard HSS tooling. The screw machine length format makes it a go-to choice for drill press work, CNC turret operations, and hand-held drilling in tight quarters. The M42 cobalt matrix provides added heat resistance over standard M2 HSS, making it appropriate for interrupted cuts and harder ferrous stock. The web-thinned, parallel web construction reduces the chisel edge load at entry, which extends bit life in production runs.
Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks across drill presses, CNC turret lathes, and hand-held power drills. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are alloy steel and aluminum. Series 2175A.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with rotating cutting tools. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized drill chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed before power is applied. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to manage heat, particularly when drilling alloy steels. Follow shop safety protocols including eye protection and secure workpiece clamping.
