The CLEVELAND C14818 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in tough materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it handles alloy steels and aluminum where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. The 135-degree split point self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on flat surfaces. At 4.016 inches overall length with a 2.008-inch flute length, the shortened screw machine geometry gives extra rigidity in drill press and CNC turret applications. Right-hand cut with a straight-cylindrical shank, this bit fits standard chucks without an adapter. The web-thinned parallel web reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation on deep cuts.
This drill bit is suited for metalworking shops, maintenance facilities, and machine shops running repetitive hole operations. The screw machine length profile is a standard choice for turret lathes, gang drills, and CNC machining centers where stub-length rigidity matters. Primary workpiece materials include alloy steel and aluminum, making it a practical option for automotive, aerospace, and general fabrication work. The heavy-duty M42 cobalt grade handles interrupted cuts and harder alloys better than M2 HSS equivalents.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit for machines accepting a 0.4724-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Fits within the 0.4500 to 0.5000 inch drill bit size range per the Series 2133 specification.
Machinist or toolroom personnel should secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet before operation. Ensure the drilling machine is de-energized and the chuck key is removed before changing bits. Run at speeds and feeds appropriate for cobalt HSS in the workpiece material being drilled. Coolant-through is not supported on this bit; external flood or mist cooling is recommended for extended production runs in alloy steel.
