The CLEVELAND C14634 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, short-reach drilling in metal fabrication and machining applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it handles heat and wear better than standard HSS bits, making it well-suited for alloy steels and aluminum. The bit measures 0.2280 inches in diameter (No. 1 wire size) with a 2-7/16-inch overall length and a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch. Web thinning improves cutting action and lowers thrust requirements at the spindle.
This bit is used in production and maintenance machining environments where stub-length tooling is preferred for rigidity and reduced deflection. Typical applications include drilling through alloy steel, aluminum, and similar ferrous and non-ferrous materials on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power tools with appropriate chucks. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks without adapters. It is installed by machinists, tool-and-die workers, millwrights, and maintenance technicians working in shop and field settings.
Designed as a direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.2280-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include alloy steel and aluminum as specified by the manufacturer.
Install in a properly rated drill press, CNC spindle, or power drill chuck and confirm the shank is fully seated and the chuck jaws are evenly tightened before operation. Always wear appropriate eye protection and secure the workpiece before beginning the cut. Use cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain dimensional tolerance. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use; a dull or damaged bit increases thrust load and can cause workpiece damage or tool breakage.
