The CLEVELAND C14540 is a cobalt screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed drilling in demanding production and maintenance environments. Built to ASME B94.11M and DIN 1897 standards, this M42 cobalt heavy-duty bit carries a wire gauge size of 45 with a decimal diameter of 0.0820 inches. The 135-degree split point reduces thrust and enables fast starts without center punching. At 1.75 inches overall length with a 0.75-inch flute length, the short screw machine profile provides maximum rigidity, minimizing deflection and breakage in short-hole drilling applications. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and production floor maintenance mechanics are the primary installers.
The C14540 is suited for drilling alloy steel and aluminum in screw machine, CNC lathe, and general production drilling setups where stub-length rigidity is required. The right-hand spiral flute with regular helix geometry evacuates chips efficiently in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The web-thinned, parallel-web construction reduces cutting resistance at the chisel edge. This bit is a strong fit for shops producing high-volume small-diameter holes in alloy and aluminum stock where tool life and repeatability matter. Individual bits are sold as single units with a minimum order quantity of 10.
Designed as an OEM-style screw machine length replacement drill bit compatible with standard straight-cylindrical shank chucks and collets accepting a 0.0820-inch shank diameter in drill presses, CNC lathes, and screw machine setups.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard drill chuck or collet rated for 0.0820-inch straight-cylindrical shanks. Ensure the spindle and work holding are fully secured and the machine is brought to appropriate RPM for the workpiece material and bit diameter before engaging the cut. Inspect the cutting edges and split point for wear or chipping before each use. Cobalt bits should not be used as levers or subjected to side loads that can cause breakage at small diameters.
