The CLEVELAND C14280 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-production drilling in hard and abrasive materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it handles alloy steels, aluminum, and similar demanding workpiece materials where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. The bit measures 1-13/16 inches overall length with a 13/16-inch flute length and a straight-cylindrical shank diameter of 0.0980 inches (wire gauge size 40). The 135-degree split point reduces thrust and self-centers on entry, minimizing the need for a center punch in many applications. Two parabolic flutes improve chip evacuation and help maintain cut quality at higher feed rates.
This bit is suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and hand-held power drills where a short, stub-length tool is preferred for rigidity and reduced deflection. The screw machine length format is a common choice in production shops drilling small-diameter holes in metal components. Typical users include machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance trades working with alloy steel and aluminum stock. The right-hand cut direction is standard for conventional clockwise spindle rotation.
Designed as a direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for any standard straight-shank chuck accepting a 0.0980-inch shank. Part of the Cleveland Series 2175 heavy-duty cobalt drill line.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or trade professionals familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the drill chuck is fully secured and the workpiece is clamped or fixtured before operation. Appropriate cutting fluid or coolant is recommended when drilling alloy steel to extend tool life, even though this bit does not feature through-coolant capability. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable shop safety procedures when operating drilling equipment.
