The CLEVELAND C14257 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding shop and field environments. Built from M42 cobalt steel with a coated finish, this bit handles tough materials including alloy steels and aluminum without losing hardness at elevated temperatures. It carries a wire gauge size of 17, equivalent to 0.1730 inches in decimal, and measures 2-3/16 inches overall length. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and allows drilling to begin without a center punch, making it well suited for production drilling and precision work on metal components. Right-hand cutting with a parabolic flute geometry and web-thinned construction improve chip evacuation and reduce thrust. Licensed or journeyman machinists and metalworking technicians are the primary installers.
This bit is used in screw machine, drill press, and hand-drill applications where a stubby, rigid profile is required to minimize deflection. It performs reliably in high-volume production environments and job-shop settings working with alloy steels, aluminum, and similar metals. The short overall length and straight cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and collet holders used across machine shop and maintenance applications. It is manufactured to ASME B94.11M standards and carries an ANSI specification designation, confirming dimensional and performance consistency across the Series 2175 product line.
Designed as a heavy-duty OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit for screw machine and drill press applications requiring a wire size 17, 0.1730-inch diameter bit with a straight cylindrical shank and standard drill chuck or collet interface.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or metalworking technicians familiar with rotating cutting tools. Ensure the drill chuck or collet is fully tightened and the workpiece is securely clamped before beginning any drilling operation. Power down and de-energize the machine before changing bits or adjusting chuck settings. Do not exceed the speed and feed parameters recommended for the workpiece material and bit diameter.
