The CLEVELAND C14216 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-speed, accurate drilling in demanding industrial and trade applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, this 5/16-inch diameter bit handles tough workpiece materials including alloy steels and aluminum. The 135-degree split point starts on contact without center punching, reducing walking and improving hole positioning. The parabolic flute geometry promotes faster chip evacuation, making this bit well suited for production drilling environments where throughput and tool life matter. At 2-13/16 inches overall length, the compact screw machine profile keeps the cutting edge close to the spindle for improved rigidity and reduced deflection.
This bit is intended for use in drill presses, CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and hand-held power drills where a stub-length tool is preferred for rigidity. The right-hand cut and straight cylindrical shank make it compatible with standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. It is commonly used by machinists, tool and die technicians, maintenance mechanics, and HVAC or plumbing tradespeople drilling through metal structural components, brackets, flanges, and equipment housings. The heavy-duty M42 grade provides elevated cobalt content for improved heat and wear resistance compared to standard M2 HSS tooling.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-fit screw machine length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.3125-inch straight cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials include alloy steel and aluminum as specified for CLEVELAND Series 2175.
This drill bit is installed and serviced by machinists, maintenance mechanics, and trade technicians operating drill presses, lathes, or portable power tools. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and power is disconnected or locked out before changing tooling. Secure the shank completely within the chuck or collet to the full recommended grip depth to prevent pullout under load. Cutting fluid or coolant is recommended when drilling steel to manage heat, even though this bit does not support through-coolant delivery.
