The CLEVELAND C11438 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) coating, this bit handles hard and abrasive materials where standard HSS tooling falls short. It features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking and requires no center punch on flat stock. The parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation and reduces heat buildup during deep drilling. At 0.1015 inches in diameter (wire size 38) and 2.5 inches overall length, it fits standard drill chucks and collets used in shop and field work. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This bit is suited for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and other tough ferrous materials in both production and maintenance environments. The straight-cylindrical shank with a diameter of 0.1015 inches seats securely in standard three-jaw chucks. The 135-degree split point geometry is particularly effective on work-hardening alloys like stainless steel, where consistent cutting pressure and chip clearance are critical. No coolant-through capability is present, so flood or mist cooling applied externally is the preferred thermal management method during extended use.
Designed for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1015-inch straight-cylindrical shank, and appropriate for any benchtop, floor, or CNC drill press setup where a wire-size 38 bit is specified. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are cast iron and stainless steel.
Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify concentricity before drilling. When working on stainless steel or cast iron, use a low spindle speed with consistent feed pressure to prevent work hardening and premature edge wear. Apply external cutting fluid or mist cooling to manage heat since this bit has no coolant-through channel. Inspect the cutting edges between operations and do not force a dull bit, as cobalt tooling can fracture under excessive lateral load.
