The CLEVELAND C04591 is a screw machine length (stub) drill bit designed for high-volume drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and trade shop environments. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it features a 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned geometry that reduces thrust and improves center starting. The bit measures 7/16 inch (0.4375 inch) in diameter with a 3-7/16 inch overall length, making it shorter and more rigid than jobber-length alternatives. It cuts right-hand with a two-flute regular spiral and a straight-cylindrical shank of the same diameter as the cutting end.
This drill bit is suited for drilling alloy steel, aluminum, and similar workpiece materials in applications where reduced bit deflection and increased rigidity matter. The shorter flute length of 2-1/16 inches is well-matched to drill press work, CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and screw machine operations where tool stickout must be minimized. General-purpose grade construction makes it appropriate for maintenance shops, fabrication facilities, and trade contractors who drill metal regularly. It conforms to ASME B94.11M dimensional standards.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with drill presses, lathes, turret machines, and hand-held drill motors accepting a 7/16 inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer include alloy steel and aluminum.
Install this bit in a chuck or collet rated for a 7/16 inch straight shank and verify the bit seats fully before operation. Secure the workpiece before drilling and apply appropriate cutting fluid when drilling alloy steel to extend tool life. Always wear eye protection and follow applicable OSHA and shop safety requirements when operating rotating cutting tools. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and replace the bit if the point geometry is compromised.
