The CLEVELAND C04531 is a screw machine length drill bit ground from high-speed steel with a 118-degree standard point angle. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length drills, which improves rigidity and reduces deflection in tight-clearance drilling applications. The 9/32 inch (0.2812 inch decimal) diameter is held to a tight tolerance of +0.0000 to -0.0010 inch. The bright uncoated finish means the steel is used as-ground, with no additional coating. Two spiral flutes with a regular helix evacuate chips efficiently during through-hole and blind-hole operations. This bit is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and metal fabricators working on general-purpose drilling tasks.
The C04531 is suited for drilling alloy steel and aluminum in production and maintenance environments where a short, stiff drill reduces chatter and breakage. The straight cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and hand-held power drills. With an overall length of 2-11/16 inches and a flute length of 1-1/2 inches, this bit is a practical choice for workpieces requiring close-tolerance holes in the 0.2500 to 0.3000 inch diameter range. The web-thinned parallel web reduces feed force at the cutting tip, which is especially useful when drilling harder alloys without coolant-through capability.
Designed as an OEM-style general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks across drill presses, CNC machining centers, and portable power drills accepting a 9/32 inch straight cylindrical shank.
Secure the shank fully in the drill chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed prior to starting the spindle. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling alloy steel to extend cutting edge life, even though this bit does not have internal coolant-through passages. Inspect the cutting lips for wear before each use and regrind or replace the bit when point geometry degrades to prevent oversized holes or work-hardening of the workpiece. No special tools beyond a standard drill chuck are required for installation.
