The CLEVELAND C04370 is a screw machine length (stub length) drill bit sized to wire gauge 54, with a decimal diameter of 0.0550 inches. It is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish and features a 118-degree standard point angle with web thinning for reduced thrust on entry. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.0550 inches in diameter and 1.0 inch in length. Overall length is 1.625 inches. The two-flute, right-hand spiral design provides efficient chip evacuation in general-purpose drilling applications. This bit is part of the Cleveland Series 2120 and conforms to ASME B94.11M standards.
This drill bit is suited for drilling into alloy steel and aluminum in production and job-shop environments where a compact, rigid tool is required. The stub length reduces deflection compared to jobber-length bits, making it a common choice for close-tolerance work on CNC machines, drill presses, and screw machines. It is used by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance trades needing consistent, repeatable hole quality in small-diameter applications. The general-purpose grade makes it appropriate for moderate-volume production runs across a range of workpiece materials.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit suitable for use in CNC drilling centers, turret lathes, drill presses, and automatic screw machines where a straight-cylindrical shank and stub flute length are specified.
Install into a compatible drill chuck or collet rated for a 0.0550-inch straight shank, ensuring the shank is fully seated and the chuck is securely tightened before operation. Secure the workpiece firmly to prevent movement during drilling. At this diameter, use appropriate cutting fluid and controlled feed rates to avoid bit breakage. Replacement and regrinding should be performed by qualified machinists following standard HSS tool-grinding procedures.
