The CHICAGO-LATROBE 70323 is a jobber-length drill bit in Letter W size (0.3860 inches diameter), manufactured from high speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. It belongs to the Series 150T and is designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication and maintenance applications. The 118-degree standard point angle and web-thinned, tapered web design reduce entry force and improve chip clearance. The TiN coating extends surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS. This bit is installed and used by machinists, pipefitters, ironworkers, and mechanical contractors working with steel and cast iron workpieces.
The 70323 is suited for production and maintenance drilling in ferrous materials including cast iron and steel. With a 3.75-inch flute length and 5.125-inch overall length, it accommodates standard drill press, magnetic drill, and handheld drill motor chucks. The straight-cylindrical shank at 0.3860 inches diameter fits standard three-jaw chucks without adapters. Coolant-through capability is not provided, so conventional surface or flood coolant application is the appropriate method when drilling at higher feed rates in production settings.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber-length drill bit suitable for use with standard drill presses, magnetic drills, and handheld drill motors accepting straight-cylindrical shanks. Primary workpiece materials listed by the manufacturer are cast iron and steel.
This drill bit is intended for use by trained machinists and mechanical trade professionals. Secure the shank fully in a properly tightened three-jaw chuck before operation and confirm the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement. Use cutting fluid or coolant appropriate for the workpiece material to manage heat buildup and extend tool life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and remove from service if the TiN coating is worn through or the point geometry is compromised.
