The CHICAGO-LATROBE 68836 is a taper length drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in metalworking applications. Built from high speed steel with a bright/uncoated finish, it features a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact, reducing walking and the need for a center punch. The parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation and allows for faster feed rates compared to standard flute designs. With a 0.5625-inch (9/16 inch) diameter and an overall length of 8.25 inches, this bit bridges the gap between jobber-length and extended-reach tooling. It is suited for licensed machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance mechanics working on steel fabrication or production drilling tasks.
The 68836 is built for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. The taper length format provides greater reach than a standard jobber bit, making it well suited for through-hole work on thicker stock or structural members where a jobber-length bit falls short. The tanged shank is sized at 0.5 inches in diameter with a 2-inch shank length, and it is compatible with standard drill chucks and taper-shank adapters used in drill presses and milling machines. Right-hand cut geometry is standard for conventional spindle rotation.
Designed for use in drill presses, milling machines, and hand-held drilling equipment that accept a 0.5-inch shank. Material compatibility includes alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals as stated by the manufacturer for Series 120DH tooling.
Secure the tanged shank firmly in the chuck or taper adapter before beginning any drilling operation. Verify spindle speed is appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter before engaging the cut. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling ferrous metals to extend tool life, even though this bit does not support through-coolant delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and do not force a dull bit, as it increases the risk of breakage and workpiece damage.
