The CHICAGO-LATROBE 68820 is a taper length, high speed steel drill bit designed for precise, high-performance drilling in metalworking and fabrication applications. The 5/16-inch (0.3125-inch) diameter bit features a 135-degree split point that self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on flat or curved surfaces. A parabolic flute geometry improves chip evacuation and allows for faster feed rates compared to standard flute designs. The bright, uncoated finish is suitable for general-purpose metal drilling. This bit is built for use by machinists, millwrights, and metal fabricators working in shop or field environments.
The 68820 is engineered for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and other non-ferrous metals. The taper length body, with an overall length of 6.375 inches and a flute length of 5.125 inches, provides extended reach for applications where a standard-length bit cannot access the work. The tanged shank ensures positive drive engagement in compatible taper-shank drill chucks and spindles. The web-thinned, tapered web configuration reduces thrust force at the cutting tip, making it well suited for heavy-duty production drilling and tough material grades.
Compatible with alloy steel, carbon steel, aluminum, and non-ferrous metals. Designed for use in taper-shank drill chucks and machine spindles accepting a 5/16-inch tanged shank. Part of the CHICAGO-LATROBE Series 120DH heavy-duty taper length program.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians familiar with drill press, lathe, or milling machine operation. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the bit from the chuck. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the material being drilled to maximize tool life and hole quality. Do not exceed the feed rate or speed range appropriate for the workpiece material and bit diameter.
