The CHICAGO-LATROBE 55471 is a reduced shank twist drill bit engineered for general-purpose drilling in metal, cast iron, and wood. It features a 1-7/64 inch (1.1094 inch decimal) cutting diameter with a reduced 1/2 inch straight-cylindrical shank, allowing larger-diameter bits to be chucked in standard 1/2 inch drill chucks. The high speed steel construction handles the heat and friction generated in production and maintenance drilling without losing edge integrity. A 118-degree standard point angle provides a reliable starting geometry across a wide range of workpiece materials. This bit is a common choice for licensed tradespeople and maintenance professionals working with portable drills on structural steel, pipe, and wood framing.
The 55471 is suited for portable drilling applications in residential and commercial settings. Its 2-flute spiral design clears chips efficiently during through-hole operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and wood. The 6 inch overall length and 3-1/8 inch flute length give adequate reach for deep holes without excessive deflection. The coated finish provides added surface hardness and light corrosion resistance during storage and use. This bit is commonly used by HVAC technicians, electricians, plumbers, and general maintenance tradespeople for drilling mounting and clearance holes on the job.
Designed as a general-purpose reduced shank drill bit compatible with portable and bench-mounted drills equipped with a 1/2 inch chuck. Suitable for drilling alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, and wood workpieces.
Install and remove this bit only when the drill is fully powered down and unplugged or the battery is removed. Secure the shank firmly in the chuck before operation and verify the bit is centered and running true before beginning a cut. For drilling in hard metals, use cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend bit life and maintain cut quality. Dispose of worn bits per shop safety procedures — dull high speed steel bits can fracture under load.
