The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54115 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit sized to Letter P (0.3230 inches decimal) with a 135-degree split point and a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. Built to M42 cobalt material grade, it delivers the heat resistance and edge retention required when drilling stainless steel and other hard ferrous materials. The 2-flute spiral design with a web-thinned, tapered web reduces thrust and improves chip evacuation. At 4.625 inches overall length with a 3.3125-inch flute length, this is a standard jobber format suited for drill press, CNC, or hand-held power tool use. Licensed HVAC technicians, plumbers, electricians, and general metalworking tradespeople reach for this bit when drilling through hard alloy or stainless substrates on the job.
The 54115 fits applications where a standard twist drill struggles. Stainless steel panel penetrations, structural steel brackets, and hard-alloy fittings are common targets. The straight-cylindrical shank (0.3230 inches diameter) seats cleanly in standard three-jaw drill chucks. The right-hand cut and regular spiral geometry suit general-purpose production and maintenance drilling. It meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it appropriate for shops and contractors with specification-controlled work orders.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and steel workpieces; compatible with any standard three-jaw drill chuck accepting a 0.3230-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for drill press, CNC drilling, and hand-held power tool use.
Install and remove drill bits only with the tool unpowered and the chuck fully released. Use cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and prolong bit life. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent walking, even with the split-point geometry. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace if chipping or dulling is observed.
