The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54112 is a cobalt jobber length drill bit sized to Letter M, equal to 0.2950 inches in diameter, designed for demanding metal drilling applications in industrial and trade environments. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit delivers extended tool life when cutting through stainless steel, alloy steel, and other hard ferrous materials. The 135-degree split point reduces thrust and walks-off on entry without a center punch. A tapered web with web thinning further reduces cutting resistance. This bit is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, pipefitters, and fabricators working with hard or abrasive workpiece materials.
The 54112 is rated for heavy-duty production drilling in both residential and commercial fabrication, maintenance, and mechanical contracting environments. Its straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks on corded drills, drill presses, and CNC machines. Primary workpiece materials include stainless steel and carbon steel. It is suited for applications where standard HSS bits fail prematurely due to work hardening or high cutting temperatures. The Series 2550 design meets DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, confirming dimensional and performance compliance for professional use.
Designed as an OEM-specification jobber length drill bit for use in standard three-jaw drill chucks accepting a 0.2950-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for drill presses, hand drills, and compatible CNC drilling operations. Primary workpiece materials specified by the manufacturer are stainless steel and steel.
This bit is installed by machinists and trade professionals using standard drill chucks on corded or machine-mounted equipment. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and verify chuck key is removed before starting the spindle. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup, as this bit does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edge before each use and replace if chipping or excessive wear is observed.
