The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54076 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit designed for demanding metal-cutting applications where standard HSS tooling falls short. Sized to wire gauge No. 41 (0.0960 inch decimal), it features a 135-degree split-point tip that self-centers on contact and reduces the thrust needed to start a hole, eliminating the need for a center punch on most surfaces. A titanium nitride (TiN) coating increases surface hardness and reduces friction to extend tool life in production environments. The M42 cobalt alloy construction resists heat buildup during high-speed drilling, making this bit well-suited for machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators working with hard or abrasive materials.
This bit is intended for drilling stainless steel and alloy steels where heat resistance and edge retention are critical. The straight-cylindrical shank seats securely in standard three-jaw drill chucks and collet holders without modification. The regular spiral flute pattern and tapered web with web-thinning promote efficient chip evacuation in through-hole and blind-hole drilling on manual drill presses, CNC drilling centers, and hand-held power tools. It conforms to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, making it appropriate for aerospace, industrial maintenance, and general metalworking applications that specify those standards.
Designed as a direct-fit jobber-length drill bit for any standard drill chuck or collet holder accepting a 0.0960-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Primary workpiece materials are stainless steel and alloy steel as noted in the product specifications.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with metal-cutting tooling. Secure the shank fully in the chuck and verify runout before drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat and prevent work hardening at the cut zone. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed, as a compromised edge accelerates tool failure in hard materials.
