The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54075 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit sized to wire gauge No. 40 (0.0980 inches) with a 135-degree split point and a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. Built to M42 cobalt steel grade, it is designed for high-performance drilling in tough materials including stainless steel and alloy steel. The split point starts on contact without a center punch, reducing walking and improving hole location accuracy. At 2.375 inches overall length with a 1.375-inch flute, this bit fits standard drill chucks and is sized for production or maintenance drilling where a right-hand spiral flute and straight cylindrical shank are required. Licensed contractors, machinists, and industrial maintenance techs are the primary users.
This bit is suited for drilling stainless steel and carbon steel in residential, commercial, and light industrial applications. The TiN coating extends surface hardness and reduces friction at the cutting edge, making it a practical choice for repetitive hole-making where tool longevity matters. The 2-flute spiral geometry clears chips efficiently during through-hole drilling. Series 2550 is a heavy-duty line built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards, giving it dimensional consistency expected on the trade floor or in a job-site kit.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and steel workpieces. Compatible with any drill press, hand drill, or CNC setup accepting a 0.0980-inch straight cylindrical shank. Conforms to NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 standards for interchangeability with jobber-length bit holders and drill blocks of the same size class.
Installation of this bit is performed by machinists, maintenance technicians, or trade professionals using standard drill presses or portable drill equipment. Secure the shank fully in the chuck before operation and confirm the chuck is tightened to manufacturer specification. When drilling stainless steel, use an appropriate cutting fluid to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or coating wear is evident at the tip.
