The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54059 is a jobber-length twist drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this bit is suited for production drilling in stainless steel and alloy steels where heat and wear resistance are critical. The 135-degree split point reduces walking and requires no center punch on most surfaces. Overall length is 4-1/8 inches with a flute length of 2-7/8 inches. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 17/64 inch in diameter, fitting standard drill chucks. This bit is intended for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals working with ferrous metals.
The 54059 is a Series 2550 jobber-length drill, a format well suited to general-purpose metal drilling in both shop and field settings. Its 17/64-inch diameter (0.2656 inch decimal) falls in the mid-range fractional size category and is a common size for clearance holes, tapping prep, and through-hole drilling in structural and stainless steel fabrication. The web-thinned, tapered-web construction improves chip evacuation and reduces thrust load, making it practical for use in hand-held drills and drill presses alike. Primary workpiece materials listed include stainless steel and steel.
Designed for drilling stainless steel and steel workpieces. Fits any standard drill chuck accepting a 17/64-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Conforms to NAS 907 Type J and DIN 338 specifications.
Install in a drill press or hand drill with a properly sized chuck before applying power. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and prolong bit life. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement and bit breakage. Inspect the cutting edges for wear before each use and replace the bit when deflection or burning is observed.
