The CHICAGO-LATROBE 54045 is a cobalt jobber-length drill bit sized to No. 35 wire gauge (0.1100 inches decimal) with a 135-degree split point and a titanium nitride (TiN) coating. It is built from M42 high-speed cobalt steel, a material grade that retains hardness at elevated cutting temperatures. The 135-degree split point self-centers on contact, reducing the need for a center punch and minimizing walking on hard surfaces. The TiN coating lowers friction and extends edge life compared to uncoated cobalt. This bit is suited to production drilling and maintenance work where tool longevity under repeated use is the primary concern.
The 54045 is intended for drilling stainless steel, alloy steel, and other ferrous metals where standard HSS bits wear prematurely. At 2-5/8 inches overall length with a 1-1/2-inch flute length, it fits standard three-jaw drill chucks and is sized for benchtop drill presses, hand drills, and magnetic-base drills used in fabrication shops, mechanical rooms, and field service work. The straight-cylindrical shank diameter of 0.1100 inches seats securely in chucks rated for that range. The Series 2550 designation places it within Chicago-Latrobe's heavy-duty cobalt line built to DIN 338 and NAS 907 Type J standards.
Designed as a jobber-length replacement or production drill bit for applications requiring a No. 35 wire-gauge hole (0.1100 inches) in stainless steel and steel workpieces. Compatible with any standard drill chuck accepting a 0.1100-inch straight-cylindrical shank.
Installation is performed by machinists, fabricators, pipefitters, and maintenance technicians using standard drill presses or hand drills. Secure the straight shank firmly in the chuck before use and verify the workpiece is clamped to prevent rotation. Use appropriate cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel to manage heat buildup and extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit when chipping or edge rounding is visible to maintain hole-diameter tolerance.
